Here are some of the pictures clicked during a six-month secondment in Kashmir Valley. We arrived at a time when the situation was extremely tense, people were exhausted from, diminishing hope and constant policing. The youth was fiercely protesting, old people were morose and children scared. A lot of my pictures here focus on portraits of people expressing their disgust and the painted walls displaying their intent. Photographing is formidable, and the street displays are full of hate texts. Some of the pictures shown in my collection depict that. Normal life has been distorted completely and people with small businesses and jobs have suffered tremendously. Amongst all these children were both traumatized and bitter. The fear of not being able to go out to play and to be devoid of education for several months made their lives miserable. Some of my pictures have illustrated their killing incense, which unwittingly has forced them to participate in protests. Also one of the worst plights of these children was during one of the worst clampdowns and depicted here is a 3-year-old child who was burned and was looked after by her distressed mother in a hospital swarmed with pellet victims. In another incidence, were desperate shopkeepers caught between Hurriyat calendar for strike and governments curfew for meager hours of business. There were somber and often tearful mothers who would see their sons with pellets to come back to life. There are several portraits depicting the older generations’ desolation as they have become mute witnesses of their disrupted life. Some of the young boys far-flung from remote Kashmir villages come with a purpose here to only become cynical and disenchanted.
